Eligibility

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

  • have applied for and met the entry requirements for a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne, or be currently enrolled in a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne

Selection criteria

All national students who are offered a research master’s or doctorate (PhD) at the University of Melbourne will receive a scholarship from the research training program (cost compensation).

Graduate research scholarships which grant an allowance as well as a compensation for costs are granted to national and international students according to their academic merit. Eligible applicants are graded and ranked according to their academic success of their last diploma obtained and their research potential in their field of study. Factors such as obtaining a diploma at the same level of the research course for which the scholarship is requested, relevant professional experience, peer-reviewed publications, specialized medical qualifications or the composition of original music may be taken in consideration.

Application process

If you are a new student and have applied for a graduate research course before the course closing date, you will automatically be considered for graduate research scholarships. You will receive a notification that a scholarship request has been added to your file within seven days of submitting your course request.

If you have accepted a graduate research course offer and a delayed start in order to be considered for a scholarship, you must submit an online application form before October 31 to be considered for a scholarship the following year. You will receive a notification that a scholarship application has been added to your file within seven days of sending the online form.

If you are currently enrolled in a graduate research course for which you are seeking a scholarship, you must submit an online application form before October 31 to be considered for a scholarship the following year. You will receive a notification that a scholarship application has been added to your file within seven days of sending the online form.

Melbourne Research Scholarships (MRS)

This scholarship is available to high-achieving domestic and international students undertaking a Masters by Research degree or doctoral degree.

Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarships

Provided by the Australian Commonwealth Government, this scholarship is available to high-achieving domestic and international students undertaking a Masters by Research degree or Doctorate by Research degree. See also the University’s RTP Scholarship Policy.

What are the benefits?

Stipend and fee offset scholarships

  • Full rate compensated for a maximum of two years for students undertaking a master’s degree by research or up to four years for students undertaking a doctorate.
  • Subsistence allowance of $ 31,200 per year pro rata (full-time study rate 2020) for a maximum of two years for students undertaking a master’s degree in research or up to 3.5 years for students undertaking a doctorate. The subsistence allowance can be indexed each year and includes limited paid sickness, maternity and parental leave.
  • Resettlement grant of $ 2,000 for students leaving a state or territory other than Victoria or $ 3,000 for students from outside Australia.
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Single Membership for international students who need a student visa to study in Australia

  • Full rate compensated for a maximum of two years for students undertaking a master’s degree by research or up to four years for students undertaking a doctorate.
